Kathy Baker, M.A., Art Teacher

Kathy’s extensive background in art and her art theories make her a match for New Morning School’s art program. She taught and created an undergraduate curriculum for the University of Michigan's Art and Design School that involved drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography as foundation skills. She also taught at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit for four years. Kathy taught an art class after school at a Montessori school for three years where she implemented an individualized course. She had a private studio in Ann Arbor where she taught students individually, ages five through 11, for four years. She is now the director of the Young Rembrandts: Power of Drawing program in southeast Michigan. She is very well-qualified and excited to be working with our children whom she found to be very creative when she worked with them during a summer drawing class.

Cheryl Blau, Ph.D., Middle School Teacher

Cheryl has two master's degrees in Humanistic and Clinical Psychology as well as Education and Instructional Technologies.  She has her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Restructuring Education. Cheryl has 20 years of experience as a presenter of cognitive neuroscience and 25 years of classroom teaching experience, K-8. She has 20 years experience as an undergraduate and graduate adjunct faculty member.  She developed the gifted program at Grosse Pointe Academy.  Cheryl is the current instructor at New Morning School for the Love and Logic parenting course. She is well-qualified and very passionate about teaching at New Morning School.

Marisa Downs, B.S., Preschool Teacher

Marisa Downs is a graduate of the teaching program at Eastern Michigan University.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree, and minored in math, science, and social studies.  She has experience teaching through eighth grade, but has a natural affinity for preschoolers.  Her patient and loving personality, combined with her enthusiasm, make your child’s first school experience wonderful and exciting for the whole family.  She respects the thoughts, feelings, and ideas of children, and is able to nurture and support them on their learning adventures both academically and socially.  

Katelyn Ewing, A.A., Kindergarten Teacher

Katelyn receive her Associates of Arts degree, summa cum laude, from Henry Ford College. Prior and during her coursework she worked at New Morning School. Katelyn has completed her New Morning School training over the last four years. She taught our parent-toddler class called Me and My Shadow as well as our preschool program for a year. Katelyn recently completed training in the Reggio Emilia approach and has in-serviced the staff with her specialized training. Katelyn also directs the New Morning School summer program. Katelyn is an exceptional and energetic teacher, making kindergarten stimulating and exciting.

Paul Hanna, B.A.A, Science and STEM Teacher

Paul received his B.A.A. degree in environmental studies and sports administration from Central Michigan University. Upon moving to Texas, he received his Certificate for Science from the Texas Education Association. He started his career as an environmental specialist for Atwell-Hicks Development Consultants. Then he began his teaching experience in Austin, Texas, teaching middle school science for six years before moving back to Michigan. Paul teaches the general science curriculum in a hands-on manner and does likewise with his STEM classes, offered to students grades 1-8. Paul is passionate about sharing science concepts with the students in a hands-on, inquiry-based program.

Tina Huff, B.S., Middle School Teacher

Tina completed her bachelor’s in journalism at Eastern Michigan University and her degree in education, with a major in English, from Madonna University. Tina worked with City Year Detroit as a corps member where she mentored students and coordinated service projects. She served as a para-pro and after-school tutor, and as a Response to Intervention (RTI) reading teacher. In her more recent experience she taught middle school language arts, social studies and writing. Tina works alongside Cheryl Blau to create an amazing program for the middle school students.

Christine Jansen, M.A., Elementary Teacher

Christine earned her bachelor’s in elementary education and her master's degree in learning disabilities at Madonna University. She taught at the Reading and Language Arts Center - a remedial reading tutoring service. She is trained in Orton-Gillingham, an approach that assists struggling readers. Christine’s sense of humor and ability to set firm, kind limits have allowed many students to experience success.

Cynthia Miller, M.A., Learning Specialist

Cynthia is our Learning Specialist and works with students needing extra assistance with academics. Cynthia is a certified teacher with a master's in Teaching and Learning (focus: Brain-based Research on Reading/ Writing). She is trained in Orton-Gillingham which is a renowned program for struggling readers. She is also trained in Reading Recovery, Project Read, and 4-Block Writing. She is excellent at fine-tuning strategies that will work with each tutoring student.

Trisha Miller. B.S., Preschool Teacher

Trisha earned her B.S.  in elementary education from Central Michigan University, with a child development major, music minor, and her ZA endorsement, graduating cum laude. Trisha taught preschool at two early childhood centers in Ann Arbor for 14 years, having taught the previous year in Bay City, MI. Trisha sought out a preschool that matches her passion. Trisha has much to offer the children and her fellow teachers.

Fred Moss, Ph.D., Music Instructor

Dr. Frederick Moss is a member of the music faculty at Schoolcraft College where he teaches a variety of courses including music for Elementary School Teachers, Music Appreciation, Popular Music in America, and Instrumental Music Performance.  As part of his work with intending elementary teachers, Dr. Moss and his students provide music instruction to students in the elementary grades at New Morning School.  Dr. Fred, as many New Morning students call him, holds a bachelor of music in music education from Furman University; a master’s of music in music education from Georgia State University; and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is also an accomplished clarinetist and pianist; Dr. Moss has performed on numerous solo and chamber music recitals.  He has taught in a variety of settings including public and private schools; public recreation departments; and rehabilitation centers.  

Martha Mauleon-Quevedo, M.A., Spanish Instructor

Martha earned her master’s in pedagogy with specialization in college teaching from Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado e Puebla, Mexico. She has been a professor at the high school and college level. She brings a love for her language and endeavors to bring Spanish to life with visuals, activities and dialogue with the children. She is passionate in her desire to share her language with the children.

Cynthia Weber, B.A., Elementary Teacher

Cynthia graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s in elementary education, with a major in math and science, and a double minor of language arts and social studies.  Cynthia has also been trained in Orton-Gillingham, a structured reading method.  She has had the privilege of working at New Morning School since 1999. She is enrolled at Madonna University and is working on a master’s in learning disabilities in an effort to find ways to make learning accessible and fun for all levels of ability. Cynthia is our in-house expert on project-based learning, having led many elaborate learning projects with the students. She also provides parent educational tips to assist their children at home on her website Parent Child Education.
